In an effort to tap into the growing markets in regions like South America and Russia, Renault has been selling models borrowed from its subsidiary, Dacia, under the Renault name. However, these models are built on older platforms and lack the advanced technology found in Renault’s European offerings. But that is about to change.

Renault has recently announced its plan to introduce eight new models specifically designed for non-European markets. These models will be built on new platforms that are capable of accommodating electrified powertrains. Renault aims to have one-third of its non-European sales come from hybrid or electric vehicles by 2027.

The new models will be split into two categories: D- and E-segment vehicles, and smaller models. The larger vehicles will utilize the CMA platform, developed by Renault in collaboration with Geely, a Chinese automaker. Interestingly, the CMA platform is the same one used in Volvo’s popular XC40 SUV. This partnership allows Renault to leverage Geely’s expertise in developing platforms for larger vehicles while also benefiting from the success and recognition of the XC40.

On the other hand, the smaller models will be built on a platform specifically developed by Renault for markets in Latin America, North Africa, Turkey, and India. This platform is said to be modular and capable of accommodating various types of powertrains. With this new strategy, Renault aims to double its net income per vehicle sold in non-European markets by 2027 compared to 2019.

As part of this expansion, Renault has unveiled a concept truck called the Niagara. This compact pickup features four doors and a modest cargo bed. It is reminiscent of the Oroch, a model currently sold in South America. The Oroch, which has been in production since 2015, is based on the previous generation Duster. It is highly likely that the production version of the Niagara will eventually replace the Oroch.

Renault’s decision to focus on affordable models for emerging markets is a strategic move that aligns with the growing demand for budget-friendly vehicles. By introducing new platforms and investing in electrification, Renault aims to capture a significant share of these markets and establish itself as a key player.
